EGNW has identified that use of “Emergency respirator” (A respirator suitable for rescue, escape, or other activities during emergency situations) will not be required at the facilities as there are no identified occurrence that could or will result in a significant uncontrolled release of an airborne contaminant, that is any emergency situations from equipment failure, rupture of containers, failure of control equipment or chemical release. R&S will ensure respiratory hazard evaluation are conducted, either for general work environment or for a specific task. R&S will determine if respirator use is required or voluntary depending on result from those evaluations. 9.19.1 Medical Clearance Medical Clearance will be required before use of air purifying respirators as wearing one can put much stress on the user’s heart and lungs. Supervisors will liaise with employee and P&C to get medical clearance. If an employee is not medically cleared, they will not be authorized to work in an environment where air purifying respirators are required. No medical clearance is required but preferred for dust mask. 9.19.2 Training Training on dust mask covering the hazards, limitations and capabilities of respirators assigned and properly inspecting, using, cleaning and storing will be provided during orientation. Training records will be available on TAG. 9.19.3 Facial Hair OSHA does not prohibit employees from having facial hair when using a tight-fitting respirator voluntarily. However, OSHA and EGNW will require employees to follow industrial hygiene practices, as well as manufacturer’s instructions even for voluntary use. 9.20 Outdoor work exposure EGNW recognized that certain jobs would require employees to work outside during harsh summer and winter seasons, exposing employees to physical hazards, biological hazards and vector-borne diseases.
