It's an alternative fuel that's a by-product of natural gas. In its natural state, Propane is colorless, tasteless and odorless. Mercaptan is added to it to aid in leak detection through sense of smell, the smell is similar to boiled cabbage or rotten egg. Propane liquid expands to 270 times its own volume. The extreme freezing effect of vaporizing propane liquid can cause serious frostbite burns, which, if, severe enough can result in the need for amputation of the affected body part. Propane gas must be handle with great precautions because to its high risk of fire, explosion, severe frostbite or asphyxiation which can lead to death. EGNW uses propane gas to fuel forklifts and generators. Employees handling propane gas will be required to use PPE when handling cylinders. Propane cylinders will be stored outdoor in a propane storage area or in an approved cylinder storage room where there is no possible sources of ignition within a 10 feet or 3 meter radius. Storage outside of buildings, for containers awaiting use will be in accordance with Table H-33: 9.12.1 Refer to compressed air procedure.
