9.13 Compressed Air Compressed air is air kept under a pressure that is greater than atmospheric pressure. There are many hazards associated with compressed air such as the cylinders can explode and cause a fire which could lead to serious injury or property damage. EGNW has identified that some operations like cleaning of equipment and forklift will require compressed air. R&S will be involved during discussion and selection of compressed air to ensure the right type of equipment is being purchased for the right task and no new hazards are being introduced into the business. This exercise will be completed by conducting a thorough risk assessment. Purchasing Department will notify Insurance and Claims Manager to proceed with permit and certificate application with L&I for any compressed air cylinders weighing above 30 gallons, fixed to the ground and hardwired to electricity. Any hardwired or fixed air compressor above 30 gallons will have to be permitted upon installation by L&I and then by Goodwill insurance company. Compressed air tanks if portable and not hard wired will not require permitting by L&I or any other regulation bodies. Compressed air shall not be used for cleaning purposes except where reduced to less than 30 pounds per square inch (p.s.i) 1 and only with effective chip guarding and personal protective equipment. All compressed air tanks will be drained at least weekly to ensure there is no build-up of water, condensation and rust, to keep the cylinder in good working order. Department Managers will be trained on how to drain that equipment. R&S and Safety Committee members will check the weekly cleaning schedule during their monthly inspection. R&S will audit the weekly cleaning schedule report on a quarterly basis.
1 PSI is a unit of pressure expressed in pounds of force per square inch of area.
